Day 1 Xian-Dunhuang by Flight

Your journey begins with a warm greeting from your guide at your Xi'an hotel or Xi'an airport. Look out for the distinctive "Your Way Holiday" welcome sign. After arriving in Dunhuang by flight, our guide and driver will pick you up at Dunhuang airport and send you to your downtown hotel for a short rest to adjust to the local climate. In the afternoon, we will head to Dunhuang Museum, a key window to understand the history and culture of Dunhuang and the Silk Road.

For lunch, our guide will provide intimate service and flexible dining options. Recommended lunch: Dunhuang Chao Mian Pian (stir-fried wheat noodles) and Rou Ding Chao Fen (diced meat fried noodles), two distinctive local snacks.

After, go to Dunhuang Museum. Located in the urban area of Dunhuang, Dunhuang Museum is a comprehensive museum focusing on collecting, protecting, researching and displaying cultural relics of Dunhuang and the Silk Road. The museum covers an area of about 16,000 square meters, with three main exhibition areas: "Dunhuang History and Culture", "Silk Road Cultural Exchange" and "Dunhuang Art Relics". It displays more than 4,000 pieces of cultural relics, including manuscripts from Cave 17 of the Mogao Grottoes (the famous Library Cave), ancient silk fabrics, painted pottery, bronze ware, and daily necessities of ancient people, covering the history from the pre-Qin period to the late Qing Dynasty. The manuscripts in the Library Cave include Buddhist scriptures, historical records, and folk documents, which are important materials for studying the history of the Silk Road and cultural exchanges between the East and the West. The ancient silk fabrics on display reflect the superb silk weaving technology of ancient China and the prosperity of silk trade on the Silk Road. The museum also uses modern display methods such as sound, light and electricity to reproduce the historical scene of the Silk Road, allowing visitors to have an immersive experience of Dunhuang's profound cultural heritage.

After visiting Dunhuang Museum, we will go to Baima Pagoda. Baima Pagoda is a famous historical site in Dunhuang, first built in the Later Qin Dynasty, with a history of more than 1,600 years. It was built to commemorate the white horse that accompanied the eminent monk Xuanzang to fetch scriptures from the Western Regions. The pagoda is 12 meters high, with a square base and a cylindrical body, adopting the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty, simple and elegant. The pagoda is made of adobe and brick, with exquisite carvings on the body, reflecting the superb architectural art of ancient Dunhuang. The scenic area has been renovated and upgraded, with new experience spaces, allowing visitors to feel the profound cultural heritage of Dunhuang while visiting the ancient pagoda.

After the tour, our guide and driver will safely take you back to the hotel. 

Day 2 Dunhuang

In the morning, our guide will pick you up at your hotel on time and take you to Mogao Grottoes, a world cultural heritage site known as the "Thousand Buddha Grottoes". The drive from downtown Dunhuang to Mogao Grottoes takes about 30 minutes, and the guide will briefly introduce the history of Mogao Grottoes on the way to help you better understand this cultural treasure.

After arriving at Mogao Grottoes, first watch a digital movie to have a preliminary understanding of the history and art of the grottoes, then take a shuttle bus to the grottoes area. Mogao Grottoes, located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang, is a large-scale grotto temple group built on the cliff face of Mingsha Mountain. It was first built in 366 CE during the Former Qin Dynasty and has been continuously constructed and expanded for more than 1,600 years, spanning 10 dynasties including the Northern Wei, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Xixia and Yuan. There are more than 735 caves, 45,000 square meters of murals and 2,415 colored sculptures, which are known as the "Art Palace on the Silk Road" and are one of the three famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites in China, together with Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes. The 8 well-preserved ordinary caves open to visitors cover different dynasties, with distinct artistic styles: the murals of the Northern Wei Dynasty are simple and vigorous, the sculptures of the Tang Dynasty are plump and graceful, and the murals of the Xixia Dynasty have unique ethnic characteristics. The murals cover a wide range of themes, including Buddhist stories, historical events, folk customs and natural scenery, which are precious materials for studying ancient Chinese art, history and culture. It should be noted that taking photos is strictly prohibited in the caves to protect the cultural relics, as the light of the camera will cause irreversible damage to the murals and sculptures. 

For lunch, the guide will take you to a local characteristic restaurant near Mogao Grottoes, allowing you to taste authentic Dunhuang food while resting. The guide will recommend signature dishes according to your taste, such as Dunhuang Braised Tofu and Scallion Bun, two classic Dunhuang delicacies. The braised tofu is tender and flavorful, soaked in special sauce, and the scallion bun is soft and juicy, with fresh scallion filling. For vegetarian or Muslim guests, the guide will specially recommend suitable restaurants and dishes to ensure that you can also enjoy delicious local food. During the meal, the guide will share the dining customs of Dunhuang, allowing you to deeply experience the local food culture. 

In the afternoon, we will go to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring, a national 5A scenic spot, the scenic spot is famous for its magical sand-moving sound and the wonderful coexistence of spring and sand. After entering the scenic area, you can explore this unique desert wonder. Mingsha Mountain is one of the four major Mingsha Mountains in China, stretching for more than 40 kilometers from southwest to northeast, with an altitude of 1,650 meters. The sand here is composed of five colors: red, yellow, green, white and black, which is rare in the world. The most magical feature of Mingsha Mountain is that when the sand is rubbed and vibrated (such as stepping on it or sliding down), it will make a low, rumbling sound, light as silk and bamboo, heavy as thunder, which is known as "Shaling Qingming" one of the eight scenic spots in Dunhuang. Crescent Spring is located at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, shaped like a crescent moon, with a length of about 100 meters and a width of about 25 meters. The spring water is clear and sweet, with a constant temperature of about 10? all year round. It has not dried up for thousands of years and has not been buried by the surrounding sand, forming a magical landscape of "sand does not cover the spring, spring does not dry up". The spring is surrounded by willow trees and grass, and the reflection of the spring water and the sand mountain is integrated, which is extremely beautiful. There is a small temple beside the spring, which is the Crescent Moon Temple built in the Qing Dynasty, adding a touch of cultural charm to this natural wonder. 

After the tour of Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring, we will go to Dunhuang Folk Custom Museum, Dunhuang Folk Custom Museum is a characteristic museum focusing on displaying the folk culture and customs of Dunhuang and the Hexi Corridor. It covers an area of about 2,000 square meters, with a variety of exhibition halls, displaying traditional dwellings, costumes, daily necessities, handicrafts and folk art works of Dunhuang people in different periods. Here, you can understand the living customs, wedding customs, festival customs of Dunhuang people, and appreciate the unique folk art such as Dunhuang paper-cutting and embroidery. The museum also has folk performance experiences from time to time, allowing you to personally feel the strong local customs and the unique cultural connotation of the Silk Road.

After the tour of Dunhuang Folk Custom Museum, our guide and driver will safely take you back to the hotel.

Day 3 Dunhuang-Xian

In the morning, our guide will pick you up at your hotel on time and take you to Yumen Pass Ruins, a famous historical site on the Silk Road. The drive from downtown Dunhuang to Yumen Pass Ruins takes about 1.5 hours. On the way, the guide will introduce the historical status of Yumen Pass, allowing you to feel the prosperity of the ancient Silk Road in advance. 

After arriving at Yumen Pass Ruins, you can visit the ruins of the ancient pass. Yumen Pass is located about 90 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang, at the western end of the Hexi Corridor. It was built in the Western Han Dynasty (around 121 BCE) to defend the frontier and manage the Silk Road trade, with a history of more than 2,100 years. In ancient times, it was an important pass on the northern route of the Silk Road, and it was the only way for envoys, merchants and monks to pass through when going west from Chang'an. The name "Yumen Pass" comes from the fact that jade from Khotan (now Hotan) in the Western Regions was transported to the Central Plains through this pass in ancient times. The remaining ruins of Yumen Pass are made of rammed earth, covering an area of about 600 square meters, with a height of about 10 meters. The city wall is thick and solid, showing the simplicity and grandeur of the ancient military pass. Around the ruins, there are scattered remains of beacon towers and ancient roads, which are witnesses to the prosperity of the ancient Silk Road. Standing on the ruins, you can overlook the vast Gobi desert, feel the vicissitudes of history, and imagine the scene of caravans passing through the pass in ancient times.

For lunch, the guide will take you to a local restaurant near Yumen Pass, where you can taste authentic Braised Lamb with Pancake, a classic Dunhuang delicacy. Tender lamb is braised with onions, green peppers and other ingredients until juicy and flavorful, and served with chewy handmade pancakes that absorb the soup, which is warm and satisfying, suitable for relieving fatigue after a long drive. The guide will assist you in ordering, and for guests with dietary taboos, they will adjust the dishes in advance to ensure that everyone can eat comfortably. During the meal, the guide will share the customs of the people living in the border area of Dunhuang, allowing you to have a deeper understanding of the local culture.

In the afternoon, we will go to Yardang National Geopark, after arriving at Yardang National Geopark, also known as "Devil City", you can visit the spectacular yardang landforms. The geopark is located in the western part of Dunhuang, covering an area of about 398 square kilometers, and is one of the largest and best-preserved yardang landform areas in the world. Yardang landforms are formed by long-term wind erosion and water erosion on the Quaternary loess and sandstone. After millions of years of natural carving, the landforms here are various in shape, such as "West Sea Fleet", "Peacock Spreading its Tail", "Lion Looking at the Moon", etc., which are magnificent and shocking. Among them, "West Sea Fleet" is the most famous scenic spot. A group of yardang landforms standing in the Gobi desert are like a huge fleet sailing on the sea, which is extremely spectacular. The geopark is also a natural geological museum, where you can see the traces of wind and water erosion, understand the evolution process of the earth's surface, and feel the powerful power of nature. In addition, the sunset scenery here is extremely beautiful, and the afterglow of the setting sun sprinkles on the yardang landforms, rendering the entire Gobi into a golden color, which is unforgettable.
