Brief Introduction
Mount Hua, located in Huayin city east of Xi’an, is one of the legendary Five Great Mountains of China and has long been celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and deep spiritual heritage. Known as “the most precipitous mountain under heaven,” it is famous for its steep cliffs, winding trails, and thrilling paths carved directly into the rock face, attracting adventurers and pilgrims alike. The mountain boasts five main peaks, each with unique characteristics: the East Peak is a perfect spot to witness the magnificent sunrise over the Yellow River; the South Peak, the highest at 2,154 meters, offers panoramic views of endless ridges; the West Peak, shaped like a lotus flower, is considered the most elegant; the North Peak, also called the Cloud Terrace, is often wrapped in mist; while the Middle Peak, or Jade Lady Peak, is linked to legends of immortals. Beyond its natural wonders, Mount Hua is a sacred center of Taoism, dotted with ancient temples, stone inscriptions, and sites where emperors once performed rituals. The Jade Spring Temple, Yuquan Yard, and numerous Taoist monasteries add to its mystique. For thrill-seekers, the infamous plank walk on sheer cliffs provides one of the most daring hiking experiences in the world. Today, Mount Hua offers visitors a unique blend of awe-inspiring scenery, cultural legends, and spiritual exploration. Whether you come to test your courage on its narrow trails, admire the sunrise, or soak in its Taoist atmosphere, a journey to Mount Hua is truly unforgettable.

The History of Mt.Hua
In the begining of the 2nd century BCE, there was a Daoist temple located here known as the Shrine of the Western Peak. Daoists believed that in the mountain lives the god of the underworld. The temple at the foot of the mountain was often used for spirit mediums to contact the god and his underlings. It's different from Taishan, which became a popular place of pilgrimage, Huashan, because of the inaccessibility of its summits, only received Imperial and local pilgrims, and was not well visited by pilgrims from the rest of China. Huashan was also an important place for immortality seekers, as many herbal Chinese medicines are grown and powerful drugs were reputed to be found there. Kou Qianzhi (365–448), the founder of the Northern Celestial Masters received revelations there, as did Chen Tuan (920–989), who spent the last part of his life in hermitage on the west peak. In the 1230s, all the temples on the mountain came under control of the Daoist Quanzhen School. In 1998, the management committee of Huashan agreed to turn over most of the mountain's temples to the China Daoist Association. This was done to help protect the environment, as the presence of taoists and nuns deters poachers and loggers.

What to see in Mt.Hua

There are mainly five peaks in Mt. Hua

East Peak (Facing Sun Peak)
The East Peak, also known as Facing Sun Peak, is located on the eastern side of Mount Huashan and rises to 2,096.2 meters above sea level. At the summit, you’ll find the “Chaoyang Terrace,” a viewing platform offering a breathtaking, panoramic view. This is the perfect spot to witness the sunrise over Huashan, with an unobstructed vista that stretches across the surrounding peaks and valleys, making it a favorite among photographers and nature enthusiasts.

South Peak (Landing Wild Geese Peak)
South Peak, or Landing Wild Geese Peak, is the highest of the five main peaks at 2,154.9 meters. This peak is rich in Taoist heritage and historical landmarks, including Laozi Peak, the Eight-Trigram Pool, and Chinese alchemy sites, all linked to the legendary philosopher Laozi. On the eastern cliff, you’ll find the “Heavenly Southern Gate.” The Golden Temple, also known as Baidi Temple, built during the Ming Dynasty, sits atop the South Peak and is dedicated to the worship of the Huashan god. The combination of natural grandeur and cultural significance makes this peak a must-visit.

West Peak (Lotus Flower Peak)
West Peak, or Lotus Flower Peak, stands at 2,082 meters and is renowned for a massive rock formation resembling the petals of a lotus flower, which is how it earned its name. Ancient scholars and poets often praised its elegant form, calling it the “Lotus Peak.” From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy striking views of the surrounding cliffs and valleys while appreciating the artistic and spiritual inspiration the peak has provided for centuries.

North Peak (Cloud Terrace Peak)
North Peak, also called Cloud Terrace Peak, reaches 1,614.9 meters and rises majestically above the surrounding terrain. Positioned on the northern side of Huashan, it connects with White Cloud Peak to the north, Liangzhang Hill to the east, and links with East, South, and West Peaks through natural paths like the Thousand-Foot Precipice, Hundred-Foot Crevice, and Laojun Plough Ditch. At the summit, the Yiyun Pavilion offers sweeping views of the other three main peaks and the Black Dragon Ridge. The peak features numerous attractions, including Zhenwu Temple, Jiaogong Stone Chamber, Changchun Stone Chamber, Jade Maiden Window, Xianyougong, Shentu Cliff, and Iron Cow Terrace. Since 1996, a cable car has made it accessible for tourists, providing an easier route to enjoy its natural beauty and historical landmarks.

Middle Peak (Jade Maiden Peak)
Middle Peak, also known as Jade Maiden Peak, is famed for its graceful slopes and mystical allure. Positioned between the other main peaks, it is often admired for its poetic beauty and legends associated with Taoist immortals. Visitors can explore scenic paths, ancient inscriptions, and small Taoist shrines along the way, making it both a cultural and adventurous highlight of Huashan.

Yuquan Yuan (Jade Spring Courtyard)
Yuquan Yuan, or Jade Spring Courtyard, is one of the earliest Taoist temples on Mount Huashan and holds immense historical and spiritual significance. Founded centuries ago, it served as a center for Taoist meditation, ritual, and scholarly study, attracting monks and pilgrims seeking enlightenment. Tucked amidst serene cliffs, towering peaks, and lush vegetation, the temple offers a peaceful refuge from the mountain’s rugged trails. Visitors can admire traditional Taoist architecture, including intricately carved wooden beams, stone inscriptions, and ancient halls that have withstood the test of time. The temple’s name comes from the natural spring that flows nearby, adding a sense of purity and tranquility to the sacred site. Yuquan Yuan not only provides insight into the origins of Taoist culture on Huashan but also offers hikers a scenic and contemplative stop along the mountain’s historic pilgrimage routes, connecting spiritual heritage with breathtaking natural beauty.

Chen Tuan Statue (Old Ancestor Chen Tuan)
The Chen Tuan Statue is the largest sculpture on Mount Huashan, measuring 12.8 meters in length, symbolizing the legendary master’s 128-year lifespan, and standing 5.6 meters tall to represent China’s 56 ethnic groups united in harmony. Perched on a granite base, the statue majestically welcomes visitors, creating an awe-inspiring sight against the backdrop of Huashan’s rugged peaks. Chen Tuan, also known as the “Sleeping Immortal,” is celebrated for his Taoist wisdom and meditation techniques. The statue captures him in a serene, contemplative pose, inviting travelers to pause and reflect while feeling the spiritual energy of the mountain. Inscribed with poetic lines that celebrate his insight and enduring presence, “Opening the great eye, seeing the mysteries of three thousand realms; dwelling in concentrated light for eight hundred years, as if one day,” this monument honors his legendary life and offers a perfect spot for photography and cultural appreciation.

Plank Walk in the Sky
For thrill-seekers visiting Mount Huashan, the Plank Walk in the Sky offers one of the most exhilarating experiences on the mountain. Clinging to sheer rock faces hundreds of meters above the valley, this narrow cliffside trail delivers a breathtaking combination of adrenaline and awe-inspiring scenery. Along the path, hikers can admire the rugged peaks of Huashan, often shrouded in mist, with dramatic views of the Thousand-Foot Precipice and the Black Dragon Ridge stretching into the distance. The walk passes by iconic spots such as the Iron Chain Path and the Jade Maiden Window, where each twist and turn reveals a new perspective of the mountain’s legendary cliffs. Safety chains and handrails provide support, but the thrill of stepping onto the suspended wooden planks keeps your heart racing. It’s a perfect mix of adventure, photography, and natural beauty, making the Plank Walk a must-do for visitors who want to experience the true daring spirit of Huashan.
