At the start of the tour, your guide meets you at the exit of a Xi'an train station or in the lobby of your Xi'an hotel, holding a "Your Way Holiday" sign. From there you ride out to the museum in a private air-conditioned car with your driver, roughly an hour each way. On the drive your guide sets out what you are about to see, so the pits make sense the moment you step in.
The first stop is Pit 1, the largest of the three exhibition halls. More than 6,000 life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots stand here in formation beneath a vaulted shed. Your guide explains how the figures were made to guard the tomb of the First Emperor Qin Shi Huang, and why no two faces are the same. The rows read best from the raised walkways along the front and sides.
You then move to Pit 3, the smallest hall and the one usually read as the command post for the army. A group of officers and a single war chariot stand here in relaxed poses rather than in rank. Because the room is small, it is the easiest pit in which to look closely at the carving on individual figures. Your guide covers the ranks shown here and how a command unit sat behind the larger formations.
Pit 2 shows a mixed fighting formation. Cavalry, archers, charioteers, and infantry are grouped in defensive units, and many of the figures were rebuilt from fragments rather than found whole, so this hall also shows how the archaeologists work. Your guide explains the tactics behind the arrangement and what the bronze weapons and armor tell us about warfare under the Qin dynasty.
After the pits, your guide takes you to a local restaurant for lunch. Meals are left out of the price so you order what you like and pay for what you eat; the guide helps with the menu and can arrange vegetarian, halal, or lighter dishes. Xi'an dishes to look for include biang biang noodles (thick hand-pulled noodles in a spicy sauce), yangrou paomo (lamb broth with torn bread), and roujiamo (a meat filling in crispy flatbread).
At the end of the half day, your driver takes you back to your Xi'an hotel or a Xi'an train station, whichever you prefer. The car and driver stay with you throughout, so your bags ride along. Tell your guide at the start of the day if you would rather spend longer in one pit and less in another; on a private tour the pace is yours to set.

I had a half day before my train and this fit perfectly. The morning departure option meant I beat the crowds at the Warriors and had the pits almost to myself for a while. The driver met me at the hotel and brought me back with time to spare for my bullet train. Simple, well run, no upsell, exactly what I needed for a short stop.
