A Deep Dive Into Xi'an’s Timeless Masterpiece: Unraveling The Song of Everlasting Sorrow
A. The Grand Live-Action Show of The Song of Everlasting Sorrow in Xi'an
a. Origin & Cultural Essence of The Song of Everlasting Sorrow
* The "Song of Everlasting Sorrow", written by Bai Juyi in 806 AD, is a timeless Chinese narrative poem that tells the tragic love story of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Yuhuan, capturing both passion and loss.

* Set in the prosperous Tang Dynasty, the poem reflects the glory and eventual decline of Chang'an (modern-day Xi'an), with historical events like the Anshi Rebellion shaping its narrative.

* The poem blends universal love, loss, and the elegant spirit of the Tang Dynasty, offering a profound insight into Chinese aesthetics and culture that resonates globally.

b. Venue: Huaqing Palace (Huaqing Hot Springs)
1. Geographical location
The performance venue sits at the foot of Lishan Mountain, only 30 kilometers east of downtown Xi'an. It is connected by metro, bus and private car, making it extremely convenient for foreign tourists to travel from the city center, the airport or tourist attractions like the Terracotta Army. Surrounded by green mountains and clear water, the whole scenic area maintains a quiet natural atmosphere far away from urban noise.

2. Historical identity
Huaqing Palace boasts a 3,000-year history, and it was the most noble royal hot spring garden in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Yuhuan spent countless romantic days here, enjoying natural geothermal hot springs and royal gardens. This is the real historical birthplace of the love story in The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, not a newly built imitation scenic spot.

3. Natural stage advantage
This is the only open-air live stage in China that takes real mountains, lakes and ancient relics as the natural background. The whole Lishan Mountain becomes a huge natural curtain at night, Huaqing Lake runs through the performance area, and ancient pavilions, corridors and hot spring ruins are integrated into the stage. No artificial decoration can replace this original historical and natural charm, and it is permanently designated as the exclusive venue for The Song of Everlasting Sorrow.

c. Stage Design & Visual Highlights
1. Integration of natural landscap
The design breaks the boundary between stage and nature. The mountain body can change light and shadow with the plot, the lake surface can reflect starry sky and fairyland scenes, and the seasonal fog in Lishan creates a hazy poetic atmosphere, perfectly fitting the romantic and sad tone of the Song of Everlasting Sorrow.

2. High-tech special effects support
It adopts top international stage technology, including full-color laser projection, 3D water curtain imaging, simulated rain and snow, real flame effects, holographic virtual images and 360-degree surround sound. Every scene has dynamic light changes, and the sound effect makes the audience feel immersive as if they are in the middle of the story.

3. Tang Dynasty scene restoration
The team restores the real layout of Tang imperial palaces, including floating water palaces, carved jade terraces, golden pavilions and long corridors. The movable floating stage glides on the lake, allowing actors to perform close to the audience and restoring the luxury of the Tang royal court in an all-round way.

4. Core competitive advantage
The combination of natural scenery and black technology makes the visual impact far exceed ordinary indoor dramas. It has been ranked among the top outdoor live shows in China for many years, and the visual highlights are the biggest reason why countless foreign tourists choose the Song of Everlasting Sorrow.

d. Full Plot & Performance Chapters
The performance is divided into nine coherent chapters, extracted from the classic lines of Bai Juyi’s poem the Song of Everlasting Sorrow. The plot progresses layer by layer from romantic encounter to eternal parting, with vivid scenes and emotional performances, helping foreign tourists fully understand the whole love story and historical tragedy without language barriers.

1. Chapter 1: Chosen by the Emperor to Stand Beside Him
This Chapter opens with the prosperous scenery of the Tang Dynasty imperial palace. Yang Yuhuan, a graceful and talented lady with unparalleled beauty, is selected into the imperial court and wins the favor of Emperor Xuanzong. Since then, the emperor dotes on her alone, and all the beauties in the harem are overshadowed, laying the prelude to this eternal love.

2. Chapter 2: Whispering Vows in the Quiet Night
On quiet moonlit nights, the emperor and Yang Yuhuan stay together in the palace, away from the hustle and bustle of court affairs. They make affectionate vows to each other, promising to be inseparable forever, just like birds flying wing to wing in the sky and trees growing branches intertwined on the ground. The warm and sweet atmosphere fully shows their deep and steadfast love.

3. Chapter 3: Bathing in Huaqing Hot Springs in Early Spring
Set in the royal Huaqing Palace at the foot of Lishan Mountain, this act restores the classic scene of the emperor accompanying Yang Yuhuan to bathe in the natural geothermal hot springs in cold spring days. The warm spring water moistens her smooth skin, and the two enjoy the leisurely and romantic time in the exclusive royal garden, which is the most comfortable and sweet period of their love.

4. Chapter 4: The Melody of the Feathered Gown Stirs the Air
Yang Yuhuan performs the world-famous Rainbow Skirt and Feathered Robe Dance, a classic elegant court dance of the Tang Dynasty. The dance is graceful and charming, accompanied by melodious imperial music. But at this moment, the faint sound of war faintly disturbs the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere, implying that the prosperous and peaceful life is about to be broken.

5. Chapter 5: Drunk Joy After the Palace Feast
Luxurious palace banquets are held frequently in the imperial court. The emperor and Yang Yuhuan enjoy fine wine, delicious food and singing and dancing together with the nobles. The whole scene is full of singing and laughter, showing the extravagance and comfort of the royal life in the prosperous Tang Dynasty, and the love between the two is deeper amid the joy.

6. Chapter 6: Fairy Music Spreading Everywhere
The final romantic sublimation. The souls of the two meet in the fairyland beyond the mortal world, interpreting that their love will never end despite the separation of life and death. Simple body language and scene changes allow foreign tourists to understand the whole story without Chinese subtitles.

7. Chapter 7: All Favors Concentrated on Her Alone
The emperor gives all his love and favor to Yang Yuhuan alone. Her relatives and family are also granted high official positions and numerous rewards, making her family extremely prominent. This act fully shows the emperor’s exclusive and unreserved love for Yang Yuhuan, which is rare in the royal family.

8. Chapter 8: The Sound of War Drums Shaking the World
The Anshi Rebellion breaks out suddenly, and the sound of war drums breaks the peace of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The rebel army advances fiercely, the capital is in danger, and the prosperous imperial palace is caught in the flames of war. The emperor has to flee the capital with Yang Yuhuan and the imperial army, and the happy days are completely shattered.

9. Chapter 9: Hair Ornaments Scattered Unattended
The imperial army mutinies at Mawei Slope on the way of escape, blaming the chaos on Yang Yuhuan and forcing the emperor to give up her life. The emperor is helpless and heartbroken, unable to save his beloved. Yang Yuhuan passes away with regret, her hair ornaments and jewelry scattered on the ground and no one picks them up. The once deep love comes to a tragic end, leaving endless sorrow and regret.

E. Traditional Cultural Elements in the Show
1. Tang Dynasty costumes
All costumes are handmade with ancient craftsmanship, including empress’s flower-patterned long skirts, emperor’s golden dragon embroidered robes, silk dance costumes and official uniforms. They fully restore the color, style and embroidery craft of the most fashionable clothing in the Tang Dynasty.

2. Classical dance performances
Integrate classic Tang dances such as Rainbow Skirt and Feather Garment Dance and Hu Xuan Dance from the Silk Road. The graceful posture and dynamic dance moves show the inclusive and diverse dance art of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.

3. Ancient traditional music
The whole performance is accompanied by pure traditional Chinese music, played with pipa, guzheng, bronze chimes, konghou and other ancient musical instruments. No modern pop music is added, retaining the original elegant ancient rhythm of the Tang era.

4. Court etiquette & makeup
Restore standard Tang royal etiquette such as imperial worship, banquet salutes and royal rituals. Meanwhile, classic Tang makeup like flower forehead ornaments, red lip beauty marks and elegant Tang hairstyles are presented in detail, letting foreign tourists intuitively feel the exquisite traditional culture behind the Song of Everlasting Sorrow.

3. Ticket Details
Ticket Types
There are two independent ticket categories that must be distinguished: the daytime entrance ticket for Huaqing Palace scenic area and the exclusive performance ticket for The Song of Everlasting Sorrow. The two are not interchangeable or bundled. Performance tickets are divided into three grades according to the viewing area: Premium Central Seats, Side Viewing Seats and Economic Rear Seats, which need to be booked separately according to travel needs.

* Official Booking Channels
Priority is given to official channels such as the official WeChat mini-program of Huaqing Palace, the official English website, and certified international travel platforms. Avoid street scalpers and unofficial private links, which are prone to fake tickets and price gouging during peak seasons. Foreign tourists can make real-name reservations directly with a valid passport number.

* Advance Booking Time
The peak season (April to October) is crowded with tourists, and tickets must be booked 10 days in advance. Weekend and holiday performances are often sold out in a short time. In the off-season (November to March), tickets are sufficient, and booking 5-7 days in advance is enough.

* Ticket Collection Methods
Present the original passport used for booking to collect physical tickets at the self-service ticket machines or manual windows at the scenic entrance. Most official platforms support direct admission with electronic QR codes, which is very convenient for foreign tourists who do not understand Chinese.

* Seat Selection Tips for Foreign Tourists
The central area seats can fully see the entire stage and the light effects of Lishan Mountain, which is the most recommended choice with the highest cost performance. Side seats are cheaper but may block part of the water screen plot. Rear seats are cost-effective but cold at night with weaker sound effects. To pursue an immersive experience of the whole plot of the song of everlasting sorrow, try to avoid the far edge seats.

* Ticket Validity
Each performance ticket is only valid for the specified show time and date, and cannot be used for other shows or dates. It is necessary to check the show time and venue clearly when booking to avoid missing the performance.

* Key Notes
Once the ticket is booked successfully, no changes or refunds are allowed, even if the show is delayed or canceled due to force majeure (such as heavy rain, typhoon), it can only be rescheduled according to the official notification. Children under 1.2 meters tall can enter for free, but they need to be accompanied by an adult and cannot occupy an independent seat.

B. Huaqing Palace Exploration (Love Story Birthplace)
A. Core Historical Attractions in Huaqing Palace
1. Tang Dynasty Royal Hot Spring Pools
These are the most iconic landmarks of Huaqing Palace and closely linked to the romance in The Song of Everlasting Sorrow. The Lotus Pool was exclusively built for Emperor Xuanzong, while the Crabapple Pool was the private hot spring of Yang Yuhuan. Fed by natural geothermal hot springs with constant temperature all year round, these original bathing sites preserve the stone carvings and pool structures from the Tang Dynasty. Tourists can stand at the ancient pools and imagine the leisurely hot spring dates of the imperial couple recorded in the classic poem.

2. Lishan Mountain Core Scenic Spots
As the natural backdrop of the live show, Lishan Mountain hides many historic spots: the Beacon Tower with ancient legend, Laomu Temple with thousands of years of worship, and mountain trails overlooking the entire Huaqing Palace. It was the private mountain garden for Tang royals, where Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Yuhuan often enjoyed mountain tours and sunset views, adding natural romance to their love story.

3. Tang Imperial Palace Ruins
Well-preserved foundation sites of ancient palaces such as Yichun Hall and Sanqing Hall remain in the scenic area. These are the real architectural relics of the Tang royal resort, showing the layout, scale and luxury of the imperial garden more than 1,300 years ago. They help foreign tourists understand where the daily life of the characters in the song of everlasting sorrow once took place.

4. The Song of Everlasting Sorrow Stele Forest
This special cultural corridor collects stone inscriptions of the full poem written by famous calligraphers from different dynasties. Every character is carved delicately, combining literature, calligraphy and stone carving art. It intuitively presents how the timeless poem has been passed down for over a millennium, deepening cultural recognition for international visitors.

5. Cross-era Historical Sites
The Five-Room Hall, a key modern historical site, is also located in Huaqing Palace. It complements the Tang Dynasty romance history, making the scenic area carry both ancient romantic legends and important modern historical memories, forming a richer cultural travel experience.

B. Natural Scenery & Garden Views
1. Lishan Mountain Natural Ecology
Lishan is covered with lush forests, clear mountain springs and unique rocky landscapes all year round. In spring, it is full of blooming flowers; in summer, it is cool and shaded; in autumn, it is dyed with red leaves; in winter, it is covered with snow. As the natural background of the night show of The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, the mountain presents different poetic scenery in four seasons, creating a dreamlike atmosphere for the love legend.

2. Huaqing Lake Water System Scenery
The entire garden is surrounded by circulating clear water from mountain springs. Huaqing Lake has rippling water surface, winding waterfront corridors, ancient pavilions standing by the lake, and reflected shadows of mountains and buildings on the water. The water curtain and floating stage of the live show are all built based on this original lake scenery, forming the unique water charm of the song of everlasting sorrow performance.

3. Classical Chinese Imperial Garden Layout
Huaqing Palace adopts the classic Tang garden design of "borrowing scenery from mountains and integrating water into the courtyard". Ancient cypresses, exotic flowers, winding paths, stacked rockeries and hidden courtyards are arranged layer by layer, realizing the changing scenery with every step. It fully shows the grandeur, elegance and subtle aesthetics of Tang royal gardens, which is very suitable for cultural sightseeing.

4. Best Sightseeing & Photography Time
Afternoon from 2 PM to 5 PM: soft natural light, suitable for visiting historical sites and taking clear cultural photos; sunset around 6 PM: the glow covers Lishan Mountain and the lake, creating romantic warm-toned photos; night after 7 PM: the whole scenic area is lit up, matching the pre-show atmosphere of the song of everlasting sorrow xi’an, perfect for shooting night scene and silhouette photos. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for outdoor tours.

Practical Travel Tips for Foreign Visitors
1. Best Visiting Time
* Best travel months
April to June and September to October are the golden visiting periods. The temperature is mild, the night sky is clear, the mountain scenery of Lishan is lush or covered with red leaves, and there are almost no extreme weather affecting the outdoor show.

* Weather avoidance reminders
Try to avoid heavy rainy days, snowy days and strong wind days. Although the stage has basic rainproof measures, heavy fog and rain will blur the mountain light effects and reduce the viewing experience of the song of everlasting sorrow xi’an. Hot summer noon is not suitable for sightseeing; arrange daytime tours in the afternoon.

* Reasonable time matching
It is recommended to visit Huaqing Palace for sightseeing from 14:00 to 18:00 in the afternoon, understand the historical sites first, then rest and prepare for the evening show, forming a complete cultural experience connection.

2. Transportation Guide
* Metro route (most convenient for foreign tourists)
Take Xi’an Metro Line 9, get off at Huaqing Palace Station Exit B, walk about 500 meters straight to the scenic gate; the whole ride from downtown takes around 40 minutes, with clear English station announcements and easy navigation.

* Public bus route
Take tourist bus No.5 or Bus 306 from Xi’an Railway Station and Big Wild Goose Pagoda directly to Huaqing Palace stop; the bus has simple English stop signs, with a travel time of about 1 hour and low cost.

* Taxi & online car-hailing
From Xi’an city center to the venue, the taxi ride takes 35–45 minutes; you can show the English name “Huaqing Palace / The Song of Everlasting Sorrow Show Venue” to the driver to avoid communication errors.

* Chartered private car
Suitable for family groups and independent foreign travelers who plan to visit the Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace in one day; private cars can arrange door-to-door pick-up and drop-off, with flexible schedules and no trouble with public transportation after the late night show.

3. Language & Service Support
* English audio guide rental
Portable electronic English audio guides can be rented at the scenic service center with your passport as a deposit; detailed explanations about Huaqing Palace history, Tang culture and the background of the song of everlasting sorrow are included.

* Foreign language service desks
The main entrance and the viewing area have professional service counters with English-speaking staff, who can answer questions about tickets, seating, routes and performance details at any time.

* English version guide materials
Free English brochures, scenic area maps and cultural introduction leaflets are provided, marking key attractions, rest areas and shooting spots clearly for international tourists.

* Barrier-free language assistance
For elderly or disabled foreign visitors, exclusive English guidance and barrier-free passage services are available throughout the scenic area.

4. Viewing Etiquette & Dress Tips
Standard viewing etiquette
Keep quiet during the whole performance; no loud talking, shouting or walking around randomly. Flash photography, video recording and live streaming are strictly prohibited, which will disturb the performers and other audiences. Food, drinks and strong-smelling snacks are not allowed into the viewing stand.

* Warm clothing reminder for night shows
The outdoor venue has a large temperature difference between day and night; even in summer, the mountain wind is cold after dark. Prepare thin coats, shawls and scarves in summer; down jackets, thick sweaters and warm blankets are necessary in spring, autumn and winter. Blanket rental services are available at the venue entrance for convenience.

* Footwear suggestions
Wear comfortable flat shoes and sneakers for daytime sightseeing in Huaqing Palace, as there are many ancient stone paths and steps. High heels, slippers and cumbersome shoes are not recommended for long walks.

* Dressing taboo
Do not wear overly exaggerated costumes or ultra-thin casual clothes; keep neat and elegant, respecting the cultural atmosphere of the Tang royal historical site.
