Day 1 Dunhuang

Your wonderful 2-day Dunhuang tour begins with a warm greeting from your guide at your hotel in Dunhuang or Dunhuang train station, depending on your preference. Look out for the distinctive "Your Way Holiday" welcome sign. After a brief introduction to the 2-day itinerary, we will head to the first attraction, Mogao Caves, with a 30-minute comfortable ride.

In the morning, we will visit Mogao Caves, also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang’s city center. As an ancient Buddhist grotto complex with a history of over 1,000 years, it was first built in 366 CE and spans from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty. Covering a large area, Mogao Caves boasts more than 735 caves, 45,000 square meters of murals and 2,415 painted sculptures, which are precious treasures of ancient Chinese art. The murals in the caves cover a wide range of themes, including Buddhist stories, historical events, folk customs and landscapes, reflecting the social life and cultural exchanges of different dynasties. The painted sculptures, with different shapes and exquisite craftsmanship, show the development of Buddhist art in ancient China.

After the morning tour of Mogao Caves, we will take a 20-minute ride to a local restaurant for lunch. You will have the opportunity to experience Dunhuang’s unique local dining culture, with a variety of authentic local dishes to choose from. We offer flexible dining options—vegetarian, Muslim and other dietary needs can be arranged in advance, ensuring you can enjoy delicious local food with peace of mind. Recommended dishes include braised donkey meat with yellow noodles, a classic Dunhuang delicacy made of chewy yellow noodles and tender braised donkey meat, and refreshing apricot juice, which is made from local dried apricots and can relieve the dryness of the desert.

In the afternoon, we will go to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring. As a national 5A-level scenic spot, it is a magical combination of desert and clear spring, attracting countless tourists with its unique natural scenery. Mingsha Mountain is a sand dune group composed of quartz sand, which is famous for its "singing sand" phenomenon—when the wind blows or visitors slide down the sand dunes, a low, rumbling sound like thunder can be heard, which is a rare natural wonder. Crescent Moon Spring, located at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, is shaped like a crescent moon, inlaid in the golden sand dunes. The spring water is clear and sweet, and it has not dried up or been buried by sand for thousands of years, forming a spectacular scene of "a spring in the desert". We include the entrance ticket to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring (excluding optional items such as camel riding, sand sliding and cable car, which are at your own expense).

At the end of the afternoon tour, our guide and driver will send you back to your hotel safely, ending the pleasant first day of the tour.

Day 2 Dunhuang

On the second day, your guide will greet you at your hotel on time in the morning. After a simple check-in, we will head to Yumen Pass, about 80 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang, with a 1.5-hour comfortable drive. During the journey, your guide will introduce the historical background of Yumen Pass, laying the foundation for your visit.

In the morning, we will visit Yumen Pass, an important pass on the ancient Silk Road, located in the vast Gobi desert about 80 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang. It was first built in the Han Dynasty and was once the gateway for caravans to travel from Central Asia to East Asia, playing a crucial role in promoting Sino-foreign cultural and economic exchanges. The main site of Yumen Pass is the ruins of Xiao Fangpan Castle, a square earthen castle made of rammed earth, with a simple and rugged shape, which has witnessed the prosperity of the ancient Silk Road. Near the castle, there are well-preserved remains of the Han Dynasty Great Wall, stretching continuously in the Gobi, showing the grandeur of the ancient frontier defense project. We include the entrance ticket to Yumen Pass (including the interval bus in the scenic area, excluding any personal consumption items).

After the morning visit, we will take a 1-hour drive to have lunch. For tourists with special dietary needs, we can make adjustments in advance to ensure you can enjoy a comfortable and delicious meal. Recommended local delicacies include lamb hezhi soup, a warm and nourishing traditional dish in Dunhuang with a history dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is made with slow-simmered mutton soup as the base, added with lamb slices, vermicelli, tofu, fungus, meatballs and other ingredients, which is fresh and flavorful. Another recommendation is hand-made baked buns, which are baked in a naan pit, with a crispy outer skin and a soft inner filling made of fresh mutton, onions and cumin, fragrant but not greasy.

In the afternoon, we will go to Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark, about 100 kilometers from Yumen Pass, with a 1-hour drive. As the largest Yardang landform area in China, the geopark covers an area of 398 square kilometers, and its unique landforms were formed by wind and rain erosion over 700,000 years. Yardang landform is a kind of wind-eroded landform, which presents various strange shapes under the long-term erosion of wind and rain. In the scenic area, there are many uniquely shaped rock formations, such as "Golden Lion Welcoming Guests" which looks like a lion squatting and welcoming guests, and "Camel" which is vividly shaped like a camel walking in the Gobi. The entire geopark is like a "natural sculpture museum", showing the magic and power of nature.

After the afternoon tour, our guide and driver will send you back to your hotel, train station or airport according to your needs, bringing this unforgettable 2-day Dunhuang tour to a perfect end.
