Day 1 Dunhuang

In the morning, your guide will pick you up from your hotel, railway station or airport as scheduled, and take you to the Mogao Grottoes. Mogao Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, has a history of over 1,600 years, spanning from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty. It boasts more than 735 grottoes, 45,000 square meters of murals and 2,415 colored sculptures, known as the "Art Gallery on the Silk Road". The grottoes are built on a cliff face along the Mingsha Mountain, with a vertical height difference of nearly 100 meters, forming a grand and spectacular group of grottoes. The murals inside cover a wide range of themes, including Buddhist stories, historical events, folk customs, and natural landscapes, which are precious materials for studying the history, culture and art of ancient China.

For lunch, your guide will take you to a local characteristic restaurant near the Mogao Grottoes, helping you experience Dunhuang’s dining culture in an immersive way. After lunch, you will head to Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Moon Spring, Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Moon Spring is a national 5A scenic spot located 5 kilometers south of Dunhuang City, stretching 40 kilometers east to west and 20 kilometers north to south. It is famous for the wonderful landscape of "mountains and springs coexisting, sand and water symbiosis". Mingsha Mountain is a quartz sand dune group, with sand color ranging from pale yellow to deep yellow. The sand is fine and soft, and when it is blown by the wind or stepped on by people, it will make a low, rumbling sound, hence the name "Mingsha Mountain". The maximum sound can reach 83 decibels, like thunder rolling in the distance. Crescent Moon Spring is located at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, with a shape like a crescent moon, covering an area of about 13.2 mu. It is surrounded by sand mountains, but it has never been buried by quicksand or dried up, relying on stable groundwater supply to maintain its vitality. The water is clear and sweet, and there are aquatic plants growing around it, forming a sharp contrast with the surrounding Gobi desert.

After visiting Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Moon Spring, you will go to Dunhuang Folk Custom Museum, which is about 15 minutes’ drive from the scenic spot. The museum is located in the southern part of Dunhuang City, covering an area of about 12,000 square meters, and is a comprehensive museum displaying Dunhuang’s folk customs and cultural heritage. It collects a large number of cultural relics reflecting Dunhuang’s folk life, including traditional dwellings, daily utensils, folk costumes, handicrafts, etc., showing the unique folk customs formed by the integration of Han, Hu and other ethnic cultures on the Silk Road. The museum is built in the style of traditional Dunhuang architecture, with courtyards connected, simple and elegant, allowing visitors to deeply understand the life style and cultural connotation of Dunhuang people in different periods.

Day 2 Dunhuang

In the morning, your guide will pick you up from your hotel on time and take you to Yumen Pass, Yumen Pass is an important pass on the ancient Silk Road, located in the western part of Dunhuang, at the western end of the Hexi Corridor. It was built in the Western Han Dynasty, with a history of more than 2,000 years, and was an important node connecting the Central Plains and the Western Regions. The pass is made of rammed earth, with a square shape, covering an area of about 600 square meters. The city wall is 9.7 meters high, 4.9 meters thick at the bottom and 3.4 meters thick at the top, with crenels and watchtowers on the top, which was an important military defense facility in ancient times. Standing in the Gobi desert, the ruins of Yumen Pass are simple and rugged, witnessing the ups and downs of the Silk Road, and are known as the "Gateway to the Western Regions".

After visiting Yumen Pass, you will go to the Han Great Wall Ruins nearby, which is about 15 minutes’ drive from Yumen Pass. The Han Great Wall Ruins in Dunhuang are part of the ancient Great Wall of China, built in the Western Han Dynasty to defend against the invasion of the Huns. The ruins stretch from east to west, with a total length of more than 100 kilometers in Dunhuang area. The wall is made of rammed earth, with a height of 3-5 meters and a width of 2-3 meters. Although after thousands of years of wind and rain erosion, most of the wall has collapsed, but the remaining parts still show the grand momentum of the ancient Great Wall. There are beacon towers every 1-2 kilometers along the wall, which were used to transmit military information in ancient times, and the ruins of the beacon towers are still clearly visible.

For lunch, your guide will take you to a local restaurant near Yumen Pass, focusing on authentic Gobi characteristic cuisine. The guide will help you choose dishes suitable for your taste, explain the ingredients and production methods of each dish, and provide flexible dining options for vegetarians and Muslim guests, such as vegetarian pilaf and cold noodles. After lunch, you will go to Dunhuang Yadan National Geopark, Dunhuang Yadan National Geopark is located northwest of Yumen Pass in Dunhuang, covering an area of more than 400 square kilometers, which is one of the largest and most typical?? landforms in China. The geopark was formed by the erosion of lake sedimentary strata by long-term wind and water. About 100,000 years ago, this area was a large lake. With the changes of the earth’s crust and the drying up of the lake, the sedimentary strata were exposed to the surface, and then formed various unique wind-eroded landforms under the long-term scouring of strong winds. The scenic area is divided into north and south districts, with various landforms such as "General's Helmet", "Peacock Spreading Its Tail", "Fleet Sailing", which are vivid and lifelike, like a huge stone city.

Day 3 Dunhuang

In the morning, your guide will pick you up from your hotel on time and take you to Dunhuang Ancient City, Dunhuang Ancient City is a film and television shooting base built in imitation of the shape of ancient Dunhuang City in the Tang Dynasty. It is located in the southern part of Dunhuang City, covering an area of about 100,000 square meters. The ancient city reproduces the market style, street pattern and architectural characteristics of ancient Dunhuang, with archways, streets, inns, workshops, teahouses, pawnshops and other buildings, all built in the style of the Tang Dynasty, full of the charm of the Silk Road. The streets are paved with bluestones, and there are various folk stalls on both sides, selling traditional handicrafts, local snacks and other commodities, which can let visitors experience the prosperity of ancient Dunhuang’s market. It has been the shooting location of many classic films and television works, and visitors can also rent Tang Dynasty costumes to take photos and experience the feeling of traveling through time and space.

After lunch, you will go to the West Thousand Buddha Caves, The West Thousand Buddha Caves are one of the Dunhuang Grottoes groups, located on the cliff about 35 kilometers away from Dunhuang urban area, with the Danghe River flowing in front of the grottoes. The grottoes were built in the same period as the Mogao Grottoes or even earlier, and the existing 22 grottoes span from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty, with 34 colored sculptures and more than 800 square meters of murals. Compared with Mogao Grottoes, the West Thousand Buddha Caves are smaller in scale, but the murals and colored sculptures here have their own characteristics. The murals are mainly Buddhist stories, with bright colors and vivid figures, and the painting style is simple and elegant, retaining the artistic characteristics of the early Dunhuang grottoes. The colored sculptures are mainly Buddha statues, Bodhisattva statues and Arhat statues, with simple and vivid shapes, showing the artistic level of different periods.

After visiting the West Thousand Buddha Caves, you will go to the Danghe River Scenic Belt, which is about 20 minutes’ drive from the scenic spot. The Danghe River is the mother river of Dunhuang, originating from the Qilian Mountains, flowing through the whole Dunhuang urban area, with a total length of about 390 kilometers. The Danghe River Scenic Belt takes the river as the main line, with green belts, plank roads, pavilions and other landscapes built along the river. The water is clear, the banks are covered with green plants, and it is a rare green landscape in the Gobi desert. Visitors can walk along the plank road by the river, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the river and the distant mountains, and feel the coolness brought by the river water, which is a good place to relax after visiting the grottoes.

Day 4 Dunhuang

In the morning, your guide will pick you up from your hotel on time and take you to Leiyin Temple, Leiyin Temple is a large Buddhist temple in Dunhuang, with a history of more than 1,000 years, first built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in modern times. The temple covers an area of about 30,000 square meters, integrating the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty and the local cultural characteristics of Dunhuang, with a grand and magnificent overall layout. The main buildings include the Mountain Gate, Heavenly King Hall, Main Hall, Scripture Collection Pavilion, etc., all built in the style of the Tang Dynasty, with red walls and yellow tiles, cornices and brackets, showing the grandeur of ancient Buddhist temples. There are many exquisite Buddha statues and murals in the temple, among which the Sakyamuni Buddha statue in the Main Hall is 13 meters high, which is solemn and dignified. After visiting Leiyin Temple, you will go to Dunhuang Museum, which is about 15 minutes’ drive from the temple. The museum collects more than 13,000 cultural relics, including murals, colored sculptures, silk fabrics, bamboo slips, coins, etc., spanning from the Neolithic Age to the Qing Dynasty. The exhibition is divided into several parts, showing the historical evolution of Dunhuang, the prosperity of the Silk Road, and the splendid Dunhuang art. Among them, the copied murals and colored sculptures from Mogao Grottoes are the highlights of the museum, allowing visitors to appreciate the charm of Dunhuang art without going to the grottoes.

It is an important pass on the ancient Silk Road, serving as a gateway for envoys, caravans and missionaries to travel between the Central Plains and the Western Regions. The scenic area covers a large area, including the ruins of Yangguan Pass, Yangguan Museum, Wangwei Statue, and the ancient post road site. The museum collects a large number of cultural relics unearthed from the surrounding area, such as Han Dynasty pottery, bronze ware, and silk fabrics, which vividly show the prosperity of the Silk Road in ancient times. Standing on the ruins of the pass, you can overlook the vast Gobi desert and feel the desolate and magnificent charm of the ancient frontier.
