Planning a one-day stop in Xi'an? This private day tour links two of the city's key archaeological sites across a 6-8 hour itinerary set to your pace. With a local guide and private car, you begin at the Terracotta Warriors, the UNESCO-listed mausoleum army of China's first emperor, and view the excavation pits up close. You then stop at the on-site Cultural Relic Restoration Center to see how fragile figures are conserved after excavation. In the afternoon, continue to Hanyang Mausoleum, burial place of a Western Han emperor, to compare how tomb design and grave goods shifted between dynasties. Tickets, guide, and transfers are arranged in advance, and the order of stops can be adjusted to your interests.

Your licensed local guide meets you with a “Your Way Holiday” sign at the Xi'an railway station exit or your hotel lobby, whichever suits you, and handles tickets and transport for the day. From the first pickup you only have to look and ask; the guiding, driving, and logistics are taken care of.

Your first stop is the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, the buried army of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor, interred around 210–209 BCE to guard his mausoleum and listed today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots stand in three main pits. Pit 1 is the largest hall, with thousands of figures (more than an estimated 6,000 in total, only partly excavated) ranked in formation, no two faces alike. Pit 3, the smallest, reads as the army's command post, with officers and war chariots in a ceremonial layout, and Pit 2 holds the mixed units — archers, cavalry, and charioteers — that show how varied the force was. Your guide walks the viewing corridors and explains what each pit says about Qin organization and the emperor's plan for the afterlife.

An optional behind-the-scenes visit takes you to the museum's Cultural Relic Restoration Center, where conservators mend broken warrior fragments and study the faded pigments that once colored the figures, using methods such as 3D scanning and microbial preservation. Access is arranged in advance for groups: applications go through official channels about a month ahead, and a hands-on workshop with replica pieces can be added for student or VIP parties. If your group qualifies it is a rare look at how slow and careful archaeology is; if not, your guide can note it as something to arrange separately.

Lunch is at a local restaurant chosen with your guide, who will steer you toward Xi'an specialties: broad hand-pulled biangbiang noodles in a spicy sauce, roujiamo — slow-cooked meat in a crisp bun, sometimes called a Chinese burger — and yangrou paomo, lamb soup with torn flatbread. Your guide helps you order and explains each dish.

After lunch, the Hanyang Mausoleum, burial park of Emperor Jing of Han and his empress in the Western Han dynasty, gives a different picture of the afterlife from the Qin army. Its pits are filled with modest terracotta figurines — soldiers, servants, and livestock — that show daily Han life rather than a battle line, arranged around the central imperial tomb. Opened to visitors in 2006 as a state-protected site, it includes what is described as China's first underground museum, where the relics are viewed in situ.

When you finish, your guide and driver take you back to the railway station or your downtown hotel, with time on the way for any last questions about the rest of your stay.
